James Gunn Explains How Dynamic Duo Explores Batman’s Sidekicks’ Origins

Dynamic Duo explores the origins of two iconic Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. Both characters eventually became Batman’s most famous sidekicks. Furthermore, the film highlights their journey from young vigilantes to trusted partners of the Dark Knight. In addition, it gives fans a closer look at the bond between Batman and his protégés. Because the film features Batman characters, speculation arose about whether it would tie into the DC Universe.

James Gunn Confirms Dynamic Duo Is Not Part of the DC Universe

Meanwhile, a Threads user, Erik Matheus Araujo, asked James Gunn about the film’s connection to the DC Universe:

“Hey James, is [it] true Dynamic Duo is being rewritten to be part of the DCU?”

Gunn clarified the rumor:

“Nope.”

Furthermore, when another user asked about the overall progress of Dynamic Duo, Gunn added:

“Really, really well.”

This confirmed that the project remains independent and is moving forward smoothly. Gunn reassures fans that the creative team is focusing on telling a standalone, character-driven story instead of fitting it into existing continuity.

The Team Behind Dynamic Duo

Announced in October 2024, Dynamic Duo is a joint effort between DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. Arthur Mintz directs the movie, bringing his expertise and unique vision to Dynamic Duo. His New Orleans studio, Swaybox, which he founded with his wife, Theresa Andersson, uses Momo animation. This unique technique combines CGI, live-action real-time performance, and stop-motion to create a visually distinctive film.

Initially, Matthew Aldrich, co-writer of Pixar’s Coco, originally wrote the script. However, in September 2025, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber were brought on to rewrite it. Notably, Neustadter and Weber co-wrote The Disaster Artist and received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. As a result, their involvement suggests that the movie will balance humor, emotional depth, and dramatic storytelling.

Producers and Creative Oversight

James Gunn and Peter Safran serve as producers for DC Studios, with Theresa Andersson producing for Swaybox Studios and Matt Reeves for 6th and Idaho. Michael Uslan is also an executive producer on the film. Despite Reeves’ involvement, Dynamic Duo remains separate from The Batman universe, including The Penguin, making it a DC Elseworlds project.

Gunn has emphasized that the film is an opportunity to explore the characters’ origins in a fresh and creative way, without being restricted by continuity or prior cinematic adaptations. Fans can expect original storytelling, new character dynamics, and surprising plot twists that set this film apart from other Batman projects.

Fans can look forward to Dynamic Duo hitting theaters on June 30, 2028. While it is not canon to the main DC Universe, the project promises a unique take on Batman’s sidekicks, offering fresh perspectives and emotional depth. The collaboration between DC Studios, Swaybox, and top-tier writers ensures that the movie will appeal to both longtime comic fans and new audiences alike.
