James Gunn’s Superman Arrives on HBO Max
Fans can finally stream James Gunn’s Superman on HBO Max starting Friday, September 19, after its 70-day theatrical run. Additionally, the film will premiere on HBO at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, September 20. Notably, the superhero movie stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, bringing a fresh take on the iconic roles. Moreover, this new cast adds excitement for both longtime fans and newcomers.
Box Office Success of James Gunn’s Superman
The film has performed remarkably at the box office, marking several milestones for DC. It earned $125 million domestically and $220 million globally during its opening weekend. To date, James Gunn’s Superman has grossed $353.9 million domestically and $615.1 million worldwide, becoming the first DC film to surpass $300 million domestically since The Batman (2022). Its 35-day Premium VOD window further boosted accessibility for fans who missed the theatrical release.
Shortened Theatrical Window Explained
James Gunn addressed the early HBO Max release, stating,
“I wanted everyone to be able to see Superman that wanted to, even those people who couldn’t get to a theater before Peacemaker. And that’s really the reason for it.”
The schedule adjustment was necessary due to conflicts with the filming and release of Peacemaker Season 2, ensuring maximum viewership for the Superman movie.
Sequel and Future of James Gunn’s Superman
Looking ahead, a sequel, Man of Tomorrow, is already in development and is slated for release on July 9, 2027. Furthermore, Gunn described the storyline as,
“A story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” emphasizing that it is “as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.”
Consequently, this sets the stage for an expanded DCU narrative, where Superman’s journey naturally intertwines with other key characters.
Special Features and Accessibility
In an effort to make the film more accessible, an American Sign Language (ASL) version of James Gunn’s Superman will also stream exclusively on HBO Max. Interpreted by Giovanni Maucere and directed by Leila Hanaumi, this version allows a wider audience to enjoy the superhero spectacle.
With its strong box office performance, upcoming sequel, and accessibility efforts, James Gunn’s Superman is poised to become a major milestone in the DCU, captivating fans old and new alike.
