HBO Max’s upcoming DCU series Lanterns is already building major momentum ahead of its debut. In fact, now a new report suggests the show may already be preparing for a second season by adding an acclaimed television creator to its team.
According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider, writer and producer Christopher Cantwell has reportedly joined the creative team for a potential Season 2 of Lanterns. Although HBO has not officially renewed the series yet, development behind the scenes nevertheless appears to be moving forward steadily. Furthermore, the reported expansion of the creative team suggests DC Studios already has strong confidence in the series’ future.
Christopher Cantwell Reportedly Joins Lanterns
The report states that Christopher Cantwell will reportedly serve as both:
- Writer
- Executive Producer
for the possible second season of Lanterns.
Cantwell is widely known for co-creating AMC’s critically acclaimed drama Halt and Catch Fire. In addition, over the years, he has also worked on several notable television projects, including:
- Paper Girls
- The Terror
- Lodge 49
Because of his strong background in character-driven storytelling, as a result, many fans believe he could be a perfect fit for the growing DCU series.
Could Benefit From Cantwell’s Comic Experience
In addition to television, Cantwell also has extensive comic book experience. He has written stories featuring several major characters, including:
- Batman
- Superman
- Moon Knight
- Thanos
- Iron Man
- The Mask
As a result, his combination of grounded drama and comic book storytelling could work especially well for Lanterns.
So far, the DCU series appears to blend:
- detective noir elements
- grounded sci-fi storytelling
- larger DC mythology
That creative direction has already generated strong interest among DC fans. In fact, many viewers are already comparing the tone of the series to HBO’s darker prestige dramas, which, in turn, could help Lanterns stand apart from previous live-action Green Lantern adaptations. Moreover, this growing comparison further highlights the show’s unique storytelling approach within the DCU.
The addition of Christopher Cantwell may also indicate that DC Studios wants the series to maintain a more mature and layered storytelling approach. Moreover, since the DCU is still in its early stages, projects like Lanterns could become extremely important for establishing the franchise’s long-term identity.
Why Lanterns Is Expanding Its Writing Team
According to the report, Lanterns creators Damon Lindelof and Tom King are both juggling additional projects at the same time, which, in turn, may help explain why the writing responsibilities are being expanded to support the show’s continued development. Moreover, as a result, this approach ensures smoother progress on the series.
Lindelof is reportedly developing HBO’s adaptation of The Chain by Adrian McKinty. Meanwhile, on the other hand, Tom King is said to be involved with another DC Studios project.
Because of those commitments, Christopher Cantwell will reportedly work closely with showrunner Chris Mundy to help:
“expand upon the first season”
Even though Season 2 has not officially been announced yet, the writers’ room is reportedly already preparing scripts in anticipation of a renewal. As a result, speculation surrounding the future of Lanterns continues to grow among DC fans.
That development strongly suggests, in turn, that Warner Bros. and DC Studios have significant confidence in the series internally.
