Grant Morrison Slams ‘Lanterns’ Creator Over ‘Stupid’ Green Lantern Comment!

By Patrick Webb Mar 17, 2026

The upcoming DC Universe series Lanterns has sparked controversy after Grant Morrison criticized remarks made by creator Damon Lindelof about the Green Lantern legacy.

Lanterns Controversy Explained

The debate began when Lindelof’s 2024 podcast comment resurfaced online. Speaking on Lovett or Leave It, he said,

“It’s called Lanterns because we all agreed that the green was stupid. Now, it’s just Lanterns.”

The remark quickly drew attention, especially among longtime fans of the Green Lantern comics. With Lanterns positioned as a major project in DC’s new era, the statement raised concerns about how faithfully the show will adapt its source material.

Grant Morrison Fires Back

Morrison, known for redefining the Green Lantern mythos in comics, strongly rejected Lindelof’s statement. Writing on Substack, he argued that dismissing the “Green” aspect shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the character’s identity.

He questioned why creators would take on projects tied to material they appear to undervalue. Morrison also compared the situation to hiring professionals who openly mock the very field they are meant to represent.

According to Morrison, this kind of attitude risks alienating core fans—the primary audience for Lanterns.

Grant Morrison’s Full Response to Lanterns Controversy

Expanding on his criticism, Grant Morrison delivered a detailed response addressing Lindelof’s remarks.

He wrote,

“TV writer/producer Damon Lindelof’s comments notwithstanding, the ‘Green’ in ‘Green Lantern(s)’ green is not ‘stupid’. Why does a writer attach himself to this kind of narrative if he thinks it’s fundamentally ‘stupid’? You don’t hand CSI scripts to patronising writers who condemn forensics experts and their haircuts as ‘stupid’, so why hire people who are ashamed and in denial about the comic book material they’ve been assigned to develop? Why don’t they turn down jobs they’re not suited for?”

Morrison continued,

“It’s not like he needs the money, and Lindelof has proven that he can come up with his own ideas. What is this jockish dismissal of superhero conventions intended to prove anyway? Does Lindelof imagine it makes him seem less nerdy? It’s a bit too late for that, so what’s it all about? The only people who give a f—k about the Lanterns TV series are Green Lantern fans. Why alienate them at the start? That feels more like ‘stupid’.”

He further added,

“Green Lanterns is a much more evocative and dramatic title than Lanterns (just as Raise the Red Lantern is a better movie title than Raise the Lantern), and anyone who can’t grasp why that is shouldn’t be anywhere near superhero stories. The show might even be good, but how much better could this stuff be if studios were willing to hire the right people for the job instead of phoning their embarrassed friends to water the source material down? Hollywood will die of insularity and inbreeding.”

Concerns About Lanterns’ Direction

The controversy comes as reactions to the Lanterns trailer remain mixed. Some viewers appreciate the grounded, serious tone, while others say it strays from the vibrant, cosmic essence of Green Lantern stories.

Additionally, fans have pointed out the absence of classic Green Lantern costumes, further raising concerns that the series may be distancing itself from traditional comic elements.

Lanterns and the Future of the DCU

Lanterns will play a key role in the rebooted DC Universe led by James Gunn. As an early project in the new slate, its success could shape future DC adaptations.

The ongoing controversy highlights the balance between modern storytelling and respecting comic book traditions.

For now, Lanterns remains under intense scrutiny, with fans eager to see whether the series can live up to expectations—or deepen the divide.
