Lanterns May Finally Fulfill What the Arrowverse Couldn’t!

Lanterns

Lanterns could finally bring an important piece of Green Lantern mythology to live action. While the Arrowverse teased several connections to the Green Lantern Corps over the years, many fans felt that the franchise never fully explored the deeper cosmic side of DC Comics.

Now, thanks to the latest footage and new story details, Lanterns appears ready to dive into comic-book lore that longtime viewers have been waiting to see for years. More importantly, the HBO Max series could succeed where the Arrowverse ultimately fell short.

Lanterns May Finally Introduce the Manhunters Properly

Recent trailers strongly suggest that the Manhunters could serve as the primary villains of Lanterns. In DC Comics, the Manhunters are ancient robotic enforcers created by the Guardians of the Universe long before the Green Lantern Corps existed.

However, the Guardians eventually abandoned the Manhunters after realizing that the machines had become too ruthless in their pursuit of justice. As a result, the Green Lantern Corps was formed to replace them.

The new footage also highlights the growing tension between Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate a much larger threat. Although DC Studios has not officially confirmed the Manhunters’ involvement, many clues point in that direction.

How the Arrowverse Missed This Storyline?

The Arrowverse briefly touched on Manhunter mythology through Mark Shaw in Arrow. Nevertheless, the series never adapted the character’s comic-book origins.

Instead, Mark Shaw appeared as a rogue ARGUS agent. In the comics, however, he eventually became an agent of the Manhunters before reinventing himself as the Privateer and later joining the Suicide Squad.

Because of this major change, fans never got to see the full Manhunter story play out in live action. Lanterns now has the opportunity to revisit that mythology and finally bring it to the screen in a meaningful way.

The Arrowverse’s Green Lantern Tease Never Paid Off

For years, Arrowverse fans believed that John Diggle would eventually become a Green Lantern. The speculation reached its peak in the finale of Arrow, which featured Diggle discovering a mysterious glowing green box.

As a result, viewers expected the franchise to continue Diggle’s transformation into a member of the Green Lantern Corps. Unfortunately, that storyline never materialized.

Even after several appearances across different shows, Diggle never officially became Green Lantern in live action. Therefore, many fans were left disappointed by the unresolved tease.

Lanterns Will Focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart

Unlike the Arrowverse, Lanterns will put Green Lantern mythology at the center of its story.

The series stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. Furthermore, the latest trailer emphasizes the complex relationship between the two heroes as they uncover a dangerous mystery.

The show premieres on HBO Max on August 16, 2026. Additionally, DC Studios plans to bring John Stewart back in Man of Tomorrow, which makes Lanterns one of the most important projects in its new universe. Although the Arrowverse laid the groundwork for Green Lantern stories, the franchise never fully explored the mythology that fans wanted to see.

Now, Lanterns has the chance to change that. If the series truly introduces the Manhunters and explores the history of the Green Lantern Corps, it could finally deliver the cosmic adventure that viewers have been waiting for.

With Hal Jordan and John Stewart leading the story, the upcoming series may succeed where the Arrowverse never could.
