The Lanterns Midseason Trailer puts Hal Jordan’s fate at the center of the mystery. The series follows veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and recruit John Stewart as they investigate a murder in Rushville, Nebraska. Their investigation eventually uncovers a much larger threat involving the Manhunters.
The trailer adds another layer to that story by showing John investigating Hal’s apparent death. However, Lanterns has not confirmed what ultimately happens to Hal. His fate remains one of the show’s biggest unanswered questions.

Gunn’s cryptic message has created another major mystery. His wording has quickly fueled speculation about what the remaining episodes could reveal.

“The blackest night” has an obvious connection to Green Lantern mythology. The phrase appears in the Lantern Oath, which includes the famous words “In brightest day, in blackest night.” However, “Blackest Night” is also the title of a major DC Comics storyline. The comic event involves the wider Lantern mythology and introduces the Black Lantern Corps as a major threat. Gunn has not confirmed that the HBO Max series will adapt that storyline. Therefore, his comment could simply reference the Lantern Oath or potentially hint at something much larger.

The Manhunter Storyline Could Become More Important
The first five episodes have already delivered a major twist involving Zoe Macon. Zoe was revealed as a Manhunter, leading to a violent confrontation in Rushville. John ultimately killed Zoe and took Hal’s ring.
John later returned the ring and battery to the Guardians after deciding that he did not want to accept their offer. That decision could have major consequences for his future as a Green Lantern.
Could Sinestro Be Connected to the Mystery?
The Lanterns Midseason Trailer also fuels speculation about Sinestro and the future direction of the series. One fan theory suggests that the show could be laying the groundwork for the Sinestro Corps.
In DC Comics, Sinestro eventually becomes associated with the Yellow Lanterns, whose rings are powered by fear rather than willpower. The series has not confirmed that this storyline will happen. Still, Sinestro’s presence has made the theory an increasingly popular possibility among fans.
Could Lanterns Set Up Blackest Night?
Another theory links Gunn’s “blackest night” comment to a larger Blackest Night storyline. The comic-book event is one of the biggest stories in Green Lantern history. It expands the conflict beyond Hal Jordan and John Stewart and brings multiple Lantern factions into the story.
A live-action adaptation would require a much larger cosmic scope than the grounded mystery established by the first episodes. For now, there is no confirmation that DC Studios intends to adapt the comic event.
Three Episodes Remain in Season 1
The Lanterns Midseason Trailer arrives with only three episodes remaining in the eight-episode season. That leaves limited time for the series to resolve Hal’s fate, develop John’s relationship with the Green Lantern Corps, and expand the Manhunter storyline. The remaining episodes could also provide more information about Sinestro and the mysterious “blackest night” referenced by Gunn. For now, however, the meaning behind the phrase remains unknown.
Lanterns continues to air on Sundays on HBO Max, with the season finale scheduled for October 4, 2026.
