Suicide Squad Actor Recalls Bizarre On-Set Moment With Jared Leto’s Joker!

Suicide Squad

A Suicide Squad actor has shared a surprising behind-the-scenes story involving Jared Leto’s Joker. The story once again highlights the chaotic and unconventional atmosphere of the 2016 DC film. Over the years, the movie has remained a frequent topic of discussion. This is largely due to its divisive tone and the unconventional performances from its cast.

Ike Barinholtz, who portrayed Griggs, a Belle Reve prison guard, recently revisited his experience during an appearance on Funny You Ask. Interestingly, his recollection adds another layer to the long-standing discussions about the film’s production and Leto’s immersive acting approach.

Suicide Squad Actor Reveals Unexpected Improvised Joker Scene

During the sequence, Joker was supposed to interrogate Griggs and threaten him to extract information about Harley Quinn’s whereabouts. However, once filming began, Jared Leto leaned heavily into improvisation, which shifted the tone of the scene unexpectedly.

Barinholtz recalled that Leto, fully staying in character, physically dominated the scene in a way that intensified the pressure on him as an actor. The improvisation escalated quickly and created a moment that the script did not originally include.

He said:

“He was supposed to be, like, menacing me in the scene. So I was acting scared, like, ‘Oh no, please.’ He’s like straddling me and is like, ‘Uh oh! Did someone piss their pants?’ And I’m a yes-ander, so I was like, ‘Yes. Yeah.’ And it was just like — that’s a rough improv to say to someone.”

Because of the unexpected direction, the scene became one of those rare filming moments where actors must quickly adapt without breaking character. Consequently, it has now become a memorable anecdote from the set of Suicide Squad, often revisited in interviews and fan discussions.

Jared Leto’s Method Acting Divided the Cast

Jared Leto’s approach to playing the Joker gained widespread attention during production. Many cast members described unusual on-set behavior that he used to stay immersed in the character. These reports included staying in character for long periods, avoiding normal interactions, and sending unconventional “gifts” to fellow actors.

As a result, his portrayal became one of the most talked-about aspects of the film even before its release. While some viewers appreciated the commitment and artistic risk, others felt the performance leaned too heavily into shock value rather than narrative depth.

Over time, this divide only grew stronger, especially after the film was released and critics delivered mixed reviews. Nevertheless, Leto’s Joker became a defining interpretation within modern DC cinema discussions.

Suicide Squad Joker Legacy Across the DC Universe

Since Suicide Squad, the Joker has appeared in multiple interpretations across different DC projects and timelines. For instance, Jared Leto briefly reprised his role in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, offering fans a darker and more refined version of his character compared to the theatrical cut.

Meanwhile, Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, reimagined the character and explored a grounded, psychological origin story. Additionally, Barry Keoghan’s brief appearance in The Batman universe hinted at yet another interpretation of the iconic villain.

At the same time, James Gunn’s new DC Universe has yet to introduce its own Batman or Joker. However, Batman is expected to debut in The Brave and the Bold. This signals that a new version of Gotham’s mythology is on the horizon.

Jared Leto’s Career Beyond DC

After Suicide Squad, Jared Leto continued expanding his career across major franchises. He later starred in Marvel’s Morbius, which generated significant online discussion but received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike.

More recently, Leto has taken on the role of Skeletor in a new Masters of the Universe adaptation. Reports from production suggest he once again embraced a highly immersive approach to the character, staying deeply engaged in his portrayal throughout filming.

However, despite the attention surrounding his performance style, the project has faced challenges at the box office. Even so, Leto remains a prominent figure in franchise filmmaking, often drawing curiosity for his unique acting methods.
