However, early estimates suggest that Warner Bros. Discovery could lose between $100 million and $120 million. Some projections also suggest that the film could reduce losses to $80 million–$85 million if it reaches around $200 million worldwide.

The report further claims that Supergirl could finish its theatrical run with up to $210 million globally, which is significantly lower than typical break-even expectations for a blockbuster of this scale. Consequently, the film is now being viewed as a major financial setback for the studio.

Analyst Reaction to Supergirl’s Performance

Film analyst Jeff Bock from Exhibitor Relations shared a critical assessment of the situation, pointing out both character limitations and audience perception issues.

He stated:

“This was always going to be a tough hurdle for DC and Warner Bros. because Supergirl isn’t a character that has ever created an event-level blockbuster. Audience perception of ‘Supergirl’ was not good. This is just a case of the film wasn’t good enough to become an event.”

His comments highlight a broader challenge for DC Studios — building strong box office appeal for lesser-established characters in an already crowded superhero market. Moreover, analysts suggest that even strong marketing may not be enough when audience familiarity is limited.

Supergirl Box Office Comparison With Other DC Films

When compared to other DC releases, Supergirl underperformed significantly and failed to match franchise expectations.

For instance, Superman opened to approximately $125 million domestically and went on to earn $618 million worldwide, showing strong global appeal and audience momentum.

In contrast, Supergirl opened with only $7.8 million domestically and $5.2 million internationally on its first day. It later reached $38 million domestically and $68 million worldwide during its opening weekend, which is far below standard DC blockbuster benchmarks.

This sharp contrast highlights not only a performance gap but also the importance of established character recognition in driving theatrical success within the DC Universe (DCU).

Competition and Critical Response Impacting Performance

The film is also facing strong competition from major releases such as Minions & Monsters, Moana, and Toy Story 5. As a result, Supergirl struggled to maintain consistent audience interest across multiple weekends.

Additionally, the film currently holds a 57% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting mixed critical reception. This lukewarm response may have further weakened word-of-mouth performance, which is often crucial for superhero films.

Moreover, industry observers note that modern audiences are increasingly selective, especially when multiple franchise films release in the same window. Consequently, even well-known superhero brands are not guaranteed strong box office returns.

DC Studios Responds to Supergirl’s Performance

Despite the disappointing results, leadership at DC Studios remains focused on long-term strategy rather than individual setbacks.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran stated:

“While ‘Supergirl’ didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.”

This statement reinforces the studio’s intent to rebuild the DCU with a more structured and sustainable approach. Meanwhile, the next DCU project, Clayface, is scheduled for release on October 23, 2026, with a significantly lower budget of $40 million, signaling a more controlled production strategy going forward.

The performance of Supergirl highlights ongoing challenges for DC Studios in balancing risk, character popularity, and audience expectations. While the film’s box office results are disappointing and may lead to significant financial losses, the studio continues to emphasize long-term planning over short-term setbacks.
