Superman has reached a remarkable milestone. In fact, he set a new all-time box office record for the character. Moreover, the Man of Steel’s latest film is now one of the highest-grossing DC movies domestically. It has clearly broken previous records. As a result, this success solidifies its place in superhero movie history.
Milestone Achieved
Film analyst Luiz Fernando shared the exciting news on social media:
“It’s DONE! #SUPERMAN beats #IT’s 328.9M, #Oppenheimer’s 330.1M, #BatmanVSuperman’s 330.4M & #ForrestGump’s 330.5M runs — #87 highest grossing film of all time and BIGGEST in history featuring SUPES at US #BoxOffice!”
With a domestic gross of $331.2 million, the film has surpassed the $330.4 million earned by Batman v Superman, becoming the 7th highest-grossing DC film domestically.
5th Weekend Performance and Superman Comparisons
During its 5th weekend, Superman earned $7.8 million, which notably marks the 8th biggest 5th weekend for a DC movie. Although there was a drop of -43.1% from the previous weekend, the film still performed admirably, especially considering it lost 615 theaters on Friday, mainly due to the debut of the new film Weapons. Despite these challenges, the movie maintained strong momentum with audiences.
For comparison, here are the 5th weekend grosses and percentage drops for comparable Marvel and DC films:
- Spider-Man: Homecoming: $8.8M (-33.3%)
- Thor: Love and Thunder: $7.7M (-41.5%)
- Spider-Man: Far From Home: $7.9M (-36.5%)
When looking specifically at DC films’ 5th weekends, the film ranks respectably among heavyweights like:
- The Dark Knight – $16.4M (-37.3%)
- Wonder Woman – $15.7M (-36.9%)
- Joker – $13.5M (-29.9%)*
- The Dark Knight Rises – $11M (-42%)
- The Batman – $11M (-46.3%)
- Aquaman – $10.2M (-41.4%)
- Suicide Squad – $9.9M (-19.1%)**
- Superman – $7.8M (-43.1%)
- Batman Begins – $6M (-39.7%)
- Batman Forever – $5.3M (-42.9%)
It is important to note that Joker’s box office numbers were significantly boosted by the extended Halloween long weekend, which greatly contributed to its elevated earnings. Likewise, Suicide Squad similarly benefited from the Labor Day long weekend, an extended holiday period that positively impacted its overall box office performance. Therefore, these factors should be taken into consideration when comparing their results to other films.
Upcoming Targets and Projected Total
The film is currently on track to maintain its strong box office performance with several upcoming milestones. Specifically, it aims to surpass Guardians of the Galaxy’s $333.7 million by Tuesday, followed closely by beating Spider-Man: Homecoming’s $335 million on Wednesday. Then, by Thursday, it is expected to exceed the earnings of Aquaman ($335.1 million) and Joker ($335.5 million), which would ultimately secure its position as the fifth highest-grossing DC film domestically.
Currently, the film is projected to finish its domestic run at approximately $360 million. Fans can also look forward to the digital release scheduled for August 26, 2025, bringing this epic adventure straight to home screens.
Superman’s new all-time record clearly demonstrates the lasting appeal of the legendary hero as well as the strong support of audiences worldwide. Furthermore, as the film continues to break new ground, Superman firmly remains a cornerstone of the DC Universe’s box office success.
