The Upcoming DCU Project slate has changed in a major way, as DC Studios co-head James Gunn has confirmed that The Authority is no longer in active development. Although fans continued speculating about the film’s future, Gunn clarified that DC Studios put the project on hold because it no longer fits the larger direction of the DC Universe.
James Gunn Confirms DC Studios Shelved The Authority in Upcoming DCU Project Update
James Gunn revealed that The Authority, once announced as part of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, is currently not moving forward.
Addressing online speculation, Gunn explained:
“Just a normal slip of the tongue.”
He further added:
“I would never have had time to do this, and although I know this is a popular theory online, I never intended to write or direct The Authority.”
This clarification ends long-running theories that Gunn was secretly developing the project himself. Instead, he made it clear the Upcoming DCU Project was paused for both creative and practical reasons.
His comments also suggest that DC Studios is taking a more disciplined approach to development. Rather than moving forward simply because DC Studios announced a project earlier, Gunn appears willing to pause or reshape films that do not serve the larger roadmap.
Why The Authority No Longer Fits the Upcoming DCU Project Slate
According to Gunn, the decision came down to more than script issues.
He explained:
“The script wasn’t quite there but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon.”

That statement suggests the project may return eventually. However, it is no longer part of the immediate roadmap.
Consequently, this marks a significant change in DC Studios’ evolving slate. While Superman, Supergirl, The Brave and the Bold, and Swamp Thing remain key pillars, this Upcoming DCU Project has stepped aside.
Additionally, Gunn’s explanation hints that connectivity within the DCU may now be prioritized even more heavily than individual project potential. That approach could help avoid the fragmented planning issues that affected earlier DC eras.
The Authority Promised to Be a Bold DCU Addition
When announced, The Authority stood out as one of the boldest projects in Chapter One.
Created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, the team debuted in 1999 under DC’s Wildstorm imprint and quickly became known for darker, more aggressive superhero storytelling.
Key Members of The Authority
The team includes:
- Jenny Sparks
- Apollo
- Midnighter
- The Engineer
- Jack Hawksmoor
Because of their anti-establishment approach, many fans believed the team could redefine the tone of the DCU.
However, this Upcoming DCU Project appears to be waiting for the right moment.
Its political themes, unconventional morality, and larger sci-fi concepts may also require a stronger DCU foundation before being introduced fully. In that sense, delaying the film may be more about timing than abandonment.
The Authority May Still Have a Future in the DCU
Although the standalone film is paused, pieces of the team already exist in the franchise.
Notably, María Gabriela de Faría portrayed The Engineer in Superman (2025). Even more interesting, the character is expected to return in Man of Tomorrow.
Therefore, while The Authority movie is shelved, the concept may still survive through other DCU stories.
Gunn also previously mentioned discussions with a “really good creator,” though those plans reportedly never advanced.
That keeps the door open for this Upcoming DCU Project to return in another form later.
In fact, some fans now speculate DC Studios may first introduce Authority members individually before revisiting a full team-up film. If so, that could allow the concept to evolve more organically inside the shared universe.
DC Studios Shifts Long-Term Focus in Upcoming DCU Project Plan
With Man of Tomorrow set for July 9, 2027, attention now shifts toward how DC Studios uses its interconnected characters moving forward. Rather than rushing a film that no longer fits, Gunn appears focused on protecting long-term DCU planning.
Meanwhile, this decision signals that DC Studios is willing to reshape announced projects when necessary, even high-profile ones. That may disappoint some fans, but it could also strengthen the franchise overall. Furthermore, it reinforces the idea that Chapter One remains flexible. While some projects move forward exactly as planned, others may evolve as the broader universe takes shape.
James Gunn’s latest comments confirm a major shake-up, as DC Studios has shelved an Upcoming DCU Project for now. While The Authority is no longer in active development, its characters and ideas may still influence the future of the DC Universe.
For now, DC Studios appears focused on projects that better support its larger vision — and that could ultimately make the evolving slate stronger.
