For months, DC fans have been wondering why Warner Bros. and DC Studios have remained relatively quiet about new projects beyond the already announced slate. Although several movies and TV shows are currently in development, major announcements about the franchise’s future have been noticeably limited.
Now, a new report suggests that the ongoing Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount merger process could be one reason behind that silence. While DC Studios continues to work on previously approved projects, the legal and business complexities surrounding the proposed merger may be influencing long-term decisions.
Warner Bros. Merger Report Reveals Restrictions on Key Properties
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the proposed Warner Bros. Discovery–Paramount merger agreement includes restrictions involving deals connected to “key property” intellectual property.
Although the agreement does not specifically define what counts as a “key property,” major franchises such as DC, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones are widely expected to fall into that category.
Furthermore, Warner Bros. Discovery can continue its regular business operations. However, any new agreement involving key intellectual property cannot extend beyond two years after the merger closes unless Paramount is given the first opportunity to negotiate.
Paramount Could Have Approval Rights Over Major Deals
The report also states that certain agreements may require Paramount’s approval depending on their value.
Deals ranging from $30 million to $400 million could face additional oversight as the merger process moves forward. As a result, Warner Bros. Discovery may be more cautious when considering large-scale investments tied to major franchises.
Because shared-universe productions often require long-term planning and significant financial commitments, finalizing those projects during an ongoing merger process can become increasingly complicated.
Is Warner Bros. Delaying Future DC Studios Projects?
Importantly, the report does not claim that DC Studios has stopped developing upcoming movies and television series.
Instead, it suggests that Warner Bros. Discovery may be taking a more careful approach while legal proceedings continue. Therefore, the lack of announcements should not necessarily be interpreted as a sign that projects have been canceled or delayed.
Large franchises like the DC Universe depend on multi-year commitments involving actors, filmmakers, and distribution plans. Consequently, studios may hesitate to finalize those agreements until the merger situation becomes clearer.
DC Studios Is Still Moving Forward With Existing Projects
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the merger, DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran continue to oversee projects that have already received approval.
