Joker: Folie à Deux, the forthcoming American musical psychological thriller, stands as the direct sequel to the 2019 film Joker. Returning to their roles are Joaquin Phoenix as the enigmatic DC Comics character, the Joker, and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Additionally, Zazie Beetz reprises her role from the original, while Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener join the cast in undisclosed roles. Directed by Todd Phillips, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver, the film is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, and Joint Effort.
Originally conceived as a standalone venture, Joker later evolved into the potential launchpad for a DC Black film series. Despite this, Phillips expressed interest in a sequel as early as August 2019, although he clarified that Joker wasn’t inherently designed to set up a continuation. Phoenix hinted at reprising his role in October 2019. The sequel officially commenced development in June 2022, with Gaga and Beetz signing on later that year. Principal photography unfolded across locations in Los Angeles, New York City, and Belleville, New Jersey, from December 2022 to April 2023.
