Excitement is building for the release of Superman in July 2025. Meanwhile, DC fans are already looking ahead. One of the most anticipated projects is Supergirl. In a recent interview, James Gunn teased Krypton flashbacks in Supergirl, adding mystery to Kara’s upcoming story. However, these flashbacks may appear in an unexpected way.
Gunn Hints at Krypton Flashbacks in Supergirl
When asked about the possibility of showing Krypton in upcoming DCU projects, Gunn responded:
“That’s always a possibility. But I think those things are really integral to the two characters and the differences between them, and that Clark really does have sort of this really happy childhood. I mean, he had parents who loved him in an easy going upbringing, and it makes him the least dysfunctional of superheroes in so many ways. And Supergirl, especially the DCU Supergirl, she’s kind of a mess. I mean, she’s, she’s had a real issues growing up. And it is based on the comic where she watched person after person after person dying in front of her as her piece of the planet disintegrated.”
This emotional distinction, as Gunn highlights, is key to understanding how the DCU will contrast Superman and Supergirl.
Why Krypton Fits Supergirl’s Story Better
Although Kal-El was just a baby when Krypton exploded, on the other hand, Kara Zor-El was old enough to remember. This difference in experience lays the foundation for her emotional arc:
- Direct emotional memory of her home planet
- Survivor’s guilt from watching family and friends perish
- A traumatized personality unlike Clark’s well-adjusted demeanor
This emotional backdrop, as a result, will shape the DCU Supergirl into a grittier and more intense character. In comparison, Gunn even described Superman as “the least dysfunctional of superheroes,” whereas Supergirl is “kind of a mess.”
Krypton Flashbacks in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – A Darker Vision
Inspired by Tom King’s acclaimed comic, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will, in contrast to Superman, offer a darker and more character-driven take on Kara Zor-El. Furthermore, Gunn’s comments suggest:
- Flashbacks of Krypton may be told from Kara’s point of view
- The film will explore themes of grief, resilience, and survival
- Expect a gritty space drama rather than a traditional superhero origin
This approach helps distinguish Supergirl from Superman and reinforces her emotional complexity in the DCU.
