Superman‘s box office performance has officially made it a certified hit. The film delivers a much-needed victory for Warner Bros.’ DC Studios. Co-led by director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran, it marks a strong start for the new DC Universe. The financial success also proves that DC can once again compete with Marvel on a global scale.
Superman’s Box Office Dominates in Its Second Weekend
During its second weekend, Superman’s box office momentum stayed strong. The film held the top spot at the domestic box office, earning $57.2 million. That’s just a 54% drop from its impressive $125 million opening — a solid hold in today’s superhero market. In only ten days, it has grossed $235 million domestically.
Interestingly, this drop mirrors that of Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, a movie that has already crossed the $1 billion milestone. When placed side by side, Superman’s numbers become even more notable. Additionally, on the international front, the film earned another $45.2 million, pushing its overseas total to $171.8 million and global gross to an impressive $406.8 million.
This success also pushes Warner Bros. ahead of Disney in the domestic market share for the year — a significant shift considering Marvel’s past dominance.
Marvel vs. Superman’s Box Office — Who’s Winning?
Despite fierce global competition from Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth and Apple Original Films’ F1: The Movie, Superman has managed to stay in the spotlight. Notably, Warner Bros. also had a hand in distributing and marketing F1, which has now reached $460.8 million worldwide.
Back in the superhero arena, Superman has already outperformed Marvel’s Thunderbolts, which ended at $383 million. It is also on the verge of overtaking Captain America: Brave New World, which finished with $415 million globally.
The film stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, with a strong supporting cast including Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Beck Bennett (Steve Lombard), and more.
What’s Next for Superman After This Box Office Run?
However, Superman’s solo box office reign may soon face serious competition. Marvel’s highly anticipated Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters on July 25, with domestic opening projections between $100 million and $110 million. Once it debuts, Superman is expected to lose access to premium formats like IMAX and Dolby Cinema — which could significantly impact its earnings in the coming weeks.
At the same time, Jurassic World Rebirth continues to perform strongly on the global stage. Now entering its third weekend, the film earned an additional $23.4 million domestically, bringing its North American total to $276.2 million. Overseas, it collected $40.3 million, raising its international total to $371.8 million. Altogether, the film has achieved an impressive $647 million worldwide.
Meanwhile, in third place is Columbia and Screen Gems’ reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer. The horror film debuted with $13 million domestically and $11.6 million internationally, for a combined $24.6 million global opening — exactly in line with early studio expectations.
