DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has shared the first update on DCU’s new Flash. He revealed hints about the hero’s debut and ties to future projects. On Peacemaker: The Official Podcast – Episode 6, Gunn spoke about canon, subtle teases, and long-term plans for the Scarlet Speedster.
Subtle Teases of DCU’s New Flash
In Superman, DCU’s new Flash appeared subtly through a Max Mercury mural in the Justice Society’s Hall of Justice. It teased the character’s existence without a full introduction.
During the Peacemaker podcast, actor Steve Agee noted a Season 1, Episode 6 scene where kids mention Flash and Wonder Woman.
Steve Agee: “Wonder Woman and Flash are mentioned in [Peacemaker’s classroom scene in Season 1, Episode 6] by the kids.”
James Gunn: “Yeah, are they canon? I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see. I mean, they’ll exist eventually. Whether they exist now, I don’t know.”
This exchange confirmed that while the Flash exists in Gunn’s DC Universe, the timeline of his arrival remains unclear.
Clarifying Canon and Future Appearances
Gunn also confirmed that Ezra Miller’s cameo as the Flash in the Peacemaker Season 1 finale is not canon to the new DCU. This move signals a clear break from the DCEU era and opens the door for a fresh take on the speedster.
Regarding Wonder Woman, Gunn hinted that the Themysciran warrior will not mirror her old-world DCEU counterpart. Instead, a new iteration is in development under DC Studios leadership.
Gunn previously stated,
“Flash and Aquaman won’t be seen in the DCU in the ‘next two years’ at least.”
This delay is intentional. It allows the rebooted DCU to establish itself with a different tone and storytelling style before reintroducing major heroes. Subtle nods, such as murals or background mentions, may continue as creative foreshadowing, similar to how Creature Commandos teased Batman’s animated form.
Building Hype Before the Big Reveal
The absence of the Flash from early DCU films doesn’t mean the character will fade from the spotlight. On the contrary, these strategic delays can increase anticipation, giving fans more excitement when the official debut arrives. With Gunn’s track record of character-driven storytelling, the eventual introduction of the DCU’s Flash could offer a fresh perspective while still honoring the hero’s iconic legacy.
For now, fans can look forward to more Peacemaker action. Season 2, starring John Cena, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, and Danielle Brooks, premieres on HBO Max on August 21, 2025.
