DC’s The Flash has made an unexpected return to live-action territory, but not through a new solo movie or one of the character’s familiar television appearances.
DC’s The Flash Appears Inside a Comic Book
The DC’s The Flash adventure begins when Stuart and his crew find themselves inside a comic book. The Scarlet Speedster appears in Episode 9 of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, which takes Stuart and his crew inside a comic book. Their strange journey brings them to Gotham City and Central City, where they encounter the Flash, Mr. Freeze, the Cosmic Treadmill, and the Adversary.
However, Stuart expects to meet Barry Allen when the Flash arrives. Instead, the episode delivers a major Golden Age twist. Stuart quickly realizes their location thanks to his extensive knowledge of comic-book history. He identifies Wayne Tower and Arkham Asylum and understands that they are in Gotham City.
Stuart even describes comic books as his “superpower.” He believes the Flash can help the group return home because the Cosmic Treadmill can travel between universes. That belief sends Stuart toward Central City in search of the Scarlet Speedster.
Jay Garrick Is the Flash Stuart Meets
When the Flash finally appears, Stuart expects Barry Allen. Instead, he comes face-to-face with Jay Garrick, the Golden Age Flash. Jay was the first Flash introduced in DC Comics and represents an earlier era of the character’s history.
His appearance gives the episode an unexpected connection to the Golden Age while allowing the story to avoid another version of Barry Allen. The reveal also becomes one of the episode’s biggest surprises.
Mr. Freeze Battles the Golden Age Speedster
Jay quickly finds himself facing Mr. Freeze. The villain manages to trap Jay in ice for a brief moment. However, Jay uses his speed to break free.
He then launches Mr. Freeze into space with a tornado-like attack. Mr. Freeze survives and eventually returns for another attempt against the heroes. The confrontation gives Jay a chance to demonstrate the abilities that made the Golden Age Flash such an important part of DC history.
The Adversary Tracks Stuart’s Journey
The danger extends beyond the comic itself. Kyle and Trevor accidentally allow Trevor to open the comic after deciding that nobody had specifically told him not to read it. Once Trevor opens the comic, he can track Stuart’s journey toward Central City.
However, the Adversary discovers what is happening and attacks Trevor. The villain then summons Mr. Freeze, adding another threat to Stuart’s already dangerous mission.
Stuart Learns Why the Characters Matter
Stuart eventually discovers another unusual detail about the comic. The group he encounters initially existed only as background characters. Their importance changes after Mr. Freeze targets them. That attack ultimately brings the Flash into the story and turns the previously minor characters into central figures.
The reveal adds another layer to the episode’s comic-book concept. It also explains how Stuart’s seemingly random adventure becomes connected to major DC characters.
A Surprise Return for DC’s The Flash
The DC’s The Flash appearance is unusual because the episode does not simply bring back a familiar Barry Allen incarnation. Instead, it introduces Jay Garrick and uses the Golden Age hero to drive the story forward.
The Cosmic Treadmill also fits naturally into the adventure because Stuart needs its universe-hopping abilities to escape the comic. Meanwhile, Gotham City, Central City, Mr. Freeze, and the Adversary turn the episode into a full DC crossover.
Jay Garrick Brings a Golden Age Twist
By replacing Stuart’s expected Barry Allen appearance with Jay Garrick, the episode gives the Flash a distinctly different return. The Golden Age speedster gets a major action sequence against Mr. Freeze while Stuart continues searching for a way back home.
The result is an unusual DC story that blends comic-book mythology, multiverse elements, and a meta-fictional adventure into one episode.
