Lanterns Season 2 Update Depends on the Writers’ Room
Safran confirmed that fans should hear an update about Lanterns Season 2 “before the end of the year.” However, the announcement does not guarantee a renewal, as the creative team still needs to establish a compelling direction for another season.
The executive praised the first season for helping restore the Green Lantern franchise’s reputation following the disappointing reception of the 2011 film.
“This was one great season of television based on a property that had been somewhat irradiated since 2011, right? The thing that’s most gratifying about this show and this season on HBO is that it’s brought Green Lantern back into the conversation, into the public culture in a really positive fashion,” Safran said.
His comments suggest that DC Studios views the series as an important step forward for the Green Lantern franchise. Nevertheless, positive reception alone will not determine whether the show continues. Explaining the renewal criteria, Safran added, “If we’re able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that’s what’s going to dictate whether there’s a second season.”
When asked whether developing a story worthy of another season was the deciding factor, Safran confirmed:
“Yes.”
Therefore, the writers’ room will play a crucial role in determining the show’s future. If the team develops a story that meets DC Studios’ expectations, Season 2 could move forward.
Peter Safran Addresses Hal Jordan’s Fate in Lanterns
Alongside the renewal discussion, Safran was asked about Hal Jordan’s fate following the first season finale. The episode ends with John Stewart charging his Green Lantern ring, leaving questions about what happens to Hal. Fans have been debating whether the veteran Green Lantern is dead and what the moment could mean for the franchise’s future. However, Safran declined to explain the scene or confirm Hal’s status.
“I can’t weigh in on what it means when he charges the ring at the end of the season,” Safran said.
His response leaves the finale’s biggest mystery unresolved. Until DC Studios or the creative team provides further clarification, viewers will have to draw their own conclusions about Hal’s fate. If the series returns, the unanswered questions surrounding Hal and John could provide important storylines for another season.
