A mysterious image in the latest Lanterns teaser has fans wondering if Atrocitus in Lanterns could be closer than expected. The brief shot features a disturbing visual involving John Stewart that may have a deeper connection to the Green Lantern comics.
The Episode 5 teaser shows a drop of blood falling onto John’s eye before spreading across it. While the moment could have a simple explanation, its imagery has sparked theories about one of the most dangerous characters in Green Lantern history.
Atrocitus in Lanterns Could Be Teased by Blood
The blood imagery has immediately caught fans’ attention because of Atrocitus’ history in the comics. Atrocitus is closely associated with blood rituals and shamanistic magic. In the comics, he uses blood rituals to forge Red Lantern rings and perform powerful rituals connected to important characters, including William Hand.
That makes the blood falling onto John Stewart’s eye particularly interesting. The teaser does not directly show Atrocitus. However, the imagery could be deliberately planting a visual clue for viewers who know the character’s comic history.
For now, Atrocitus in Lanterns remains only a theory. Still, the connection becomes more intriguing when considering the show’s story surrounding the Manhunters.

Antaan Has a Story Similar to Atrocitus
Lanterns has already introduced Antaan, played by Paul Ben-Victor. Antaan leads an alien hit squad that has come to Earth seeking revenge against the rogue Manhunters. Those machines are responsible for the near-genocide of his people.
His backstory has noticeable similarities to Atrocitus’ comic origin. In the comics, rogue Manhunters attacked Space Sector 666 and nearly wiped out all life in the region. Atrocitus survived the massacre, but the attack cost him his wife and children.
He eventually formed the Five Inversions and dedicated himself to taking down the Guardians of the Universe. The similarities between Antaan and Atrocitus do not confirm that the Red Lantern villain will appear. However, they make the possibility much harder for fans to ignore.
The Manhunters Could Connect Everything
The series has also created its own version of the Manhunter mystery. In Lanterns, the Manhunters are connected to Abin Sur’s crash on Earth. However, the circumstances surrounding that event differ from the comic-book storyline.
Now, Episode 5 will bring Antaan and his hit squad to Rushville as they continue searching for the Manhunter. That becomes especially important after Episode 4 confirmed Zoe Macon’s identity as the Manhunter.
With Antaan closing in and the Manhunter’s identity exposed, the next episode could reveal more about the larger threat behind the story.
Could John Stewart Be Affected by Rage?
The blood imagery could have another important meaning. If the teaser is hinting toward Atrocitus in Lanterns, John Stewart could potentially become connected to the character through rage or another form of influence.
Atrocitus is the founder of the Red Lantern Corps, whose members draw power from rage. Blood and anger are therefore both strongly associated with his mythology. The teaser does not explain what happens to John after the blood reaches his eye. It could simply be part of the mystery surrounding the Manhunters. However, the possibility that John could experience uncontrollable rage gives the scene another intriguing layer.
Episode 5 Could Reveal a Major Lanterns Twist
The arrival of Antaan’s group puts John and Hal Jordan in an increasingly dangerous situation. Meanwhile, Zoe Macon’s revelation as the Manhunter gives the story another major piece of the puzzle.
If the series is building toward Atrocitus in Lanterns, Episode 5 could provide the first major confirmation. Even a small reference to Red Lantern mythology could significantly expand the show’s cosmic story. At this stage, fans should treat the theory as speculation. DC Studios has not confirmed Atrocitus’ involvement, and the blood imagery could have another explanation. Still, the combination of blood, Manhunters, Antaan’s backstory, and John’s potential connection to rage has given fans plenty to investigate.
When Does Lanterns Episode 5 Release?
New episodes of Lanterns release on Sunday nights on HBO Max from DC Studios. Episode 5 will continue the story as Antaan’s hit squad arrives in Rushville and searches for the Manhunter.
Whether the episode finally reveals a connection to Atrocitus in Lanterns remains unknown. For now, the blood-covered image has become one of the biggest clues for fans looking for connections to Green Lantern’s comic mythology.
