A brand-new clip from the upcoming Superman movie finally answers a long-debated question in comic book lore. How do Clark Kent’s hypno glasses actually keep his identity a secret? The scene premiered during Nathan Fillion’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Since then, fans have been buzzing about the reveal.
Guy Gardner Reveals the Secret Behind Clark Kent’s Hypno Glasses
In the scene, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner strikes up a conversation with Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, asking how she knows Superman. Lois coolly responds, “I just do.” Gardner then drops the surprising detail about Clark’s eyewear:
“I’m not saying who he is, just that he wears hypno glasses. They make his face terrific. How do they work? They make his face look different in your brain when he wears them so that you don’t know who he is.”
As Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl tries to stop Gardner from revealing too much, he insists he’s not naming names. But the statement makes it clear — the glasses don’t just obscure vision; they alter perception itself.
Lois, ever unshaken, responds with a knowing:
“Yeah, I know.”
The interaction delivers both humor and world-building, offering a clever and concise explanation for one of Superman’s oldest mysteries.
James Gunn Reveals the Comic Book Origins of Superman’s Disguise
Director James Gunn shared how the idea behind Clark Kent’s hypno glasses made its way into the upcoming film. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Gunn recalled a conversation with comic writer Tom King, which gave him a new perspective on the iconic disguise.
“I was sitting with Tom King… and I was like, ‘You know the thing that I just don’t really know how to reconcile in myself is the glasses…’ But he said, ‘You know, there’s an answer for that in the comics, it’s canon that they hypnotize people.’”
According to Gunn, the glasses had always bothered him growing up. However, King’s reminder that the hypnosis explanation was already part of comic book canon helped him fully embrace the concept.
As a result, Gunn decided to incorporate that very explanation into the movie — giving Clark Kent’s hypno glasses a grounded, comic-accurate origin that makes sense in the world of the new DC Universe.
With David Corenswet stepping into the iconic role of Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced, the film is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. It officially kicks off James Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe — and with details like Clark Kent’s hypno glasses now canonically explained, it’s clear this version of Superman is aiming for both authenticity and fun.
