Creature Commandos Season 2 could introduce one of DC Comics’ most powerful heroes as the DCU continues expanding its interconnected world.
By the time the second season concludes, the DCU is expected to have introduced significantly more characters and locations. The new season will arrive after major projects such as Lanterns, Clayface, and Man of Tomorrow. As a result, the series could potentially explore or reference elements established by those projects.
Creature Commandos Season 2 Could Introduce Captain Atom
According to a report from Nexus Point News, Captain Atom is reportedly set to appear as a recurring character in the second season. If accurate, the appearance could mark the character’s DCU debut.
The reported version is Nathaniel Adam, the comic book character who famously served as the template for Doctor Manhattan in Watchmen. However, Captain Atom’s reported involvement has not been officially confirmed by DC Studios. Other significant DC Comics characters could also potentially appear alongside him, although no additional appearances have been confirmed.
Who Is Captain Atom?

Captain Atom is one of DC Comics’ most powerful superheroes. Nathaniel Adam was originally a military officer who became Captain Atom after participating in a dangerous experiment. The character gained extraordinary abilities and became closely associated with concepts involving energy and matter.
Captain Atom’s comic book history has also influenced Watchmen. Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Doctor Manhattan was partly inspired by the character. Introducing Captain Atom into the DCU could therefore give the franchise another powerful hero with connections to some of its more cosmic and science-fiction elements.
James Gunn Won’t Write Season 2
Another significant change for Creature Commandos Season 2 involves its creative team. James Gunn will not write the episodes for the new season. Instead, Dean Lorey will serve as showrunner and lead writer while working with a full writers’ room. Lorey also served as showrunner during the first season. However, Gunn personally wrote all seven episodes of the debut season.
The change does not necessarily represent a criticism of Gunn’s approach. Instead, it reflects the broader creative structure that DC Studios appears to be developing for the new DCU.
Dean Lorey Takes a Larger Creative Role
Lorey’s expanded role could allow Creature Commandos to develop its own identity within the larger DCU. Gunn has a distinctive filmmaking style, and his creative influence is visible across the projects he directly writes and directs. However, the DCU is designed to include projects with different tones and creative approaches.
Giving different writers and filmmakers opportunities to lead individual projects could help prevent the entire franchise from feeling identical. That could become increasingly important as more DCU projects begin connecting with one another.
Creature Commandos Season 2 Could Expand the DCU
The timing of Creature Commandos Season 2 could make the series particularly interesting. The second season will arrive after audiences have seen projects such as Lanterns, Clayface, and Man of Tomorrow. Those stories could establish additional characters, locations, and conflicts that the animated series could potentially reference.
Captain Atom could also give the series a connection to a different corner of the DC Universe. However, his reported appearance remains unconfirmed.
A More Diverse DCU Could Be Taking Shape
The DCU is expected to feature a wide range of storytelling styles. Gunn’s projects have a recognizable creative identity, but the larger universe does not necessarily need every project to follow the same approach.
Allowing different creative teams to lead individual movies and shows could give characters and franchises their own identities while still allowing them to exist within one connected continuity. That could be especially useful as the DCU becomes more interconnected.
For now, fans will have to wait for official confirmation before Captain Atom’s involvement in Creature Commandos Season 2 can be considered established. If the report proves accurate, however, Nathaniel Adam could become one of the most notable new heroes introduced in the next chapter of James Gunn’s DCU.
