James Gunn is the writer-director of Superman and co-head of DC Studios. He has revealed that his next DCU movie is moving forward faster than expected. This update suggests that cameras could start rolling much sooner than fans anticipated.
James Gunn Confirms Progress on His Next DCU Movie
In a conversation with Variety, Gunn shared that he has already finished an extensive treatment for his upcoming project. He explained:
“I’m totally done with the treatment. My treatments are incredibly intense. They’re not regular treatments. They’re 60-page treatments with dialogue and everything. And so, now I’m just turning that into a script. We’re planning out when we’re going to shoot that. It’s going to be much sooner rather than later.”
These remarks confirm that the new DCU movie could enter production sooner than expected. It may become one of the quickest turnarounds following a major release.
How the Next DCU Movie Expands Beyond Superman
While Superman officially kicked off the new DC Universe, Gunn stressed that it will not dictate the tone of future films. He emphasized:
“Clayface is a totally different thing. Although it’s in the same universe, it’s a complete horror film, and that’s one of the things we want to do. There’s not a company style. It’s not like every movie is gonna be like Superman. The artists and the directors, and the writers that create each one will bring their own sense to it. … We don’t want people being bored.”
This approach highlights DC Studios’ commitment to creative freedom, ensuring each DCU movie maintains its individuality while contributing to the shared universe.
Superman’s Place in the Bigger DCU
Superman, released on July 11, 2025, introduced audiences to David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel while also debuting several future heroes. These included Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl, who appeared in a post-credits teaser.
Looking ahead, Supergirl will headline Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in 2026, arriving just months before the horror-inspired Clayface movie releases in September of that year.
Peacemaker Season 2 Connects the DCU Movie Timeline
Before those films, HBO’s Peacemaker Season 2 will bridge key storylines. Gunn teased:
“If they watch the next season of Peacemaker, they’ll see where a lot of these things are going, and have a little bit more of a sense of maybe what can happen.”
With John Cena reprising his role as Peacemaker alongside familiar faces like Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), and Economos (Steve Agee), the show is poised to set up major DCU connections.
Superman is now playing in theaters and available digitally, serving as the first chapter in James Gunn’s bold new DCU.
