Lanterns Episode 6 explained one of the biggest mysteries created by the show’s 10-year time jump: why is Guy Gardner now the active Green Lantern on Earth, and what really happened to Hal Jordan? The episode finally gives viewers a clearer picture of what happened to the Green Lantern mantle during those missing years.
Hal Jordan is presumed dead. John Stewart walked away from the Green Lantern Corps. And Guy Gardner is now the official Green Lantern operating on Earth. But Episode 6 also leaves behind one enormous question:
Is Hal Jordan really dead?
Because if he isn’t, Guy Gardner’s position as Earth’s Green Lantern could become much more complicated.
Why Is Guy Gardner the Green Lantern?
The answer begins with what happened to Hal and John after the Rushville disaster. Hal spent years in prison following the events surrounding Rushville, effectively removing him from active Green Lantern service. John, meanwhile, chose an entirely different path. When John talks about his time as a Green Lantern, he describes it as lasting only five minutes. Rather than continuing his career with the Corps, he returned to civilian life and eventually built a business with Marcus, using his knowledge of large-scale threats to develop protected underground stadiums.
That left Earth without either Hal or John serving as an active Green Lantern. That’s where Guy Gardner comes in. By the time John returns to Rushville in 2026, Guy has become the functioning Green Lantern connected to the Corps.
And unlike John, Guy has institutional access. He knows what happened to Hal’s ring. He knows that it was decommissioned and that it is being kept at the Guardians’ headquarters on Oa. That makes one thing clear:
Guy isn’t simply pretending to be the Green Lantern. He’s the official Lantern filling the position left vacant by Hal and John.
John Stewart Gave Up the Ring — and Guy Got the Opportunity
John’s decision becomes even more important when Guy explains the status of Hal’s ring. John had the opportunity to continue down the Green Lantern path, but he chose not to. A decade later, Guy is benefiting from that decision. There’s an interesting irony here.
Guy’s position exists partly because John walked away.
That’s why John later appeals to Guy on a personal level. When Hal’s funeral takes place, John asks Guy for access to Hal’s ring so that Hal can be buried in his Green Lantern uniform.
Guy initially doesn’t want to get involved. His concern is that investigating Hal’s murder could create “bad optics.” The moment is played for humor, but it also highlights the difference between the two characters. Guy is thinking like an official representative of the Corps. John is thinking about Hal. Eventually, Guy agrees. And that decision sets up one of the episode’s most important moments.
John Stewart Takes Hal Jordan’s Ring
After Hal’s funeral, John secretly removes Hal’s old ring from the grave. Suddenly, the situation isn’t as simple as:
Hal is dead. Guy is the Lantern. John is retired.
Instead, all three characters become connected to the Green Lantern legacy in completely different ways. Hal is presumed dead. Guy officially holds the mantle. John has secretly reactivated Hal’s ring. And that’s where the show’s 10-year timeline starts to become much more interesting.
But Is Hal Jordan Really Dead?
This is where Lanterns may be hiding its biggest mystery. There are already theories that Hal’s apparent death isn’t exactly what it seems, and the mid-season trailer gives fans a particularly interesting piece of evidence to examine. In one brief shot, Hal can be seen with a distinctive mark on his arm.
That wouldn’t necessarily mean anything on its own. But the mark becomes more interesting when compared with what we’ve already seen involving Zoe, the Manhunter and the tissue sample used to help heal John. The series has already established that biological material can play an important role in the story. And Hal appears to have a mark that looks strikingly similar to the one associated with that process. That raises a very uncomfortable question:
What happened to Hal’s body?
Could Hal Jordan Have Been Cloned?
Nothing in Episode 6 confirms that Hal was cloned. However, the series has introduced advanced biological technology and mysterious processes that make the possibility worth discussing. If the mysterious mark on Hal is connected to the same technology or biological process involving John’s treatment, there could be more going on than a simple death.
One possibility is that Hal was abducted and replaced by a clone. And there’s another piece of information that makes this theory even more intriguing:
Sinestro has escaped from prison.
Could those events somehow be connected? One theory is that Sinestro could have abducted Hal, used advanced technology to create a duplicate and placed that duplicate on Earth. That would mean the Hal whose death everyone witnessed may not necessarily be the original Hal Jordan. Again, this remains speculation. But the pieces are certainly there for fans to connect:
- Hal disappears after the Rushville events.
- Hal is eventually presumed dead.
- A strange mark appears on his arm.
- The series has established technology involving biological replication.
- Zoe’s story introduced the importance of tissue samples.
- Sinestro has now escaped from prison.
- John secretly takes Hal’s ring after his funeral.
That’s a lot of suspicious pieces for one storyline.
And What About Zoe?
Zoe being dead makes the situation even more interesting. Her story may be over, but the biological technology and information introduced through her character could still have consequences. If the tissue sample was important enough to help save John, there’s a possibility that the science behind it could become relevant again.
And if Lanterns is heading toward a storyline involving cloning, duplication or altered identities, Hal could be at the center of it. Of course, there’s another possibility. The mark could have nothing to do with cloning at all. It could be connected to Hal’s imprisonment, his injuries, the Manhunters or something that hasn’t been revealed yet. That’s what makes the trailer shot so intriguing.
Sinestro’s Escape Could Change Everything
Sinestro escaping from prison is another major development that shouldn’t be overlooked. His return creates an obvious connection to Hal’s story. If Sinestro has information about what happened to Hal, his escape could eventually reveal that the events surrounding Hal’s disappearance were very different from what John and the others believe.
And if Sinestro is somehow involved in Hal’s disappearance, the consequences could extend far beyond the question of who currently wears the Green Lantern mantle. It could mean that Guy Gardner’s entire position was built around the assumption that Hal Jordan is gone.
But what happens if that assumption is wrong?
The Three Lanterns Are Now in Completely Different Positions
That’s what makes Episode 6 so important. The show has effectively separated its three human Lanterns into three different corners of the story.
Hal Jordan: Presumed dead, but surrounded by unanswered questions.
Guy Gardner: The officially recognized Green Lantern on Earth.
John Stewart: No longer officially a Lantern, but secretly carrying Hal Jordan’s old ring.
And now there is a fourth piece on the board:
Sinestro is free.
That combination could completely reshape the second half of the season.
So Who Is Really the Green Lantern?
For now, the answer is Guy Gardner. The 10-year timeline explains how he ended up in the position. Hal was removed from service, John abandoned the role, and Earth eventually needed another active Lantern. But Episode 6 may have deliberately created a much bigger mystery underneath that explanation.
Because if Hal really is dead, Guy’s position makes perfect sense. If Hal is alive, however, everything changes. And if the cloning theory is somehow correct, the question becomes even stranger:
Is the Hal Jordan who died actually the real Hal Jordan?
Lanterns hasn’t answered that yet. But between Hal’s mysterious mark, the established biological technology, John’s possession of Hal’s ring and Sinestro’s escape, there are now several unanswered questions surrounding Hal’s fate. The 10-year timeline may have explained why Guy Gardner became the Green Lantern. But it may have also been hiding the real mystery:
