Several clues suggest that Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart may be heading toward an unexpected transformation involving the Yellow Lantern mythology. The theory also connects the potential twist to something James Gunn revealed more than three years ago.
Lanterns Season Finale Spoiler Points to Earth One
The artwork used during the original Lanterns announcement came from Green Lantern: Earth One, an alternate-universe story released between 2018 and 2019. That connection is particularly interesting because the Earth One version of John Stewart becomes a Yellow Lantern.
When Gunn announced Lanterns in January 2023, he confirmed that the series would focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart. However, DC Studios did not use images of Kyle Chandler or Aaron Pierre because neither actor had joined the project at that point. Instead, the announcement featured comic book artwork. That choice may now be worth another look.
The artwork selected for the Lanterns announcement specifically featured that version of John. Gunn later reused the same imagery in 2024 when confirming that Lanterns had officially been greenlit. At the time, the artwork may have simply represented the Green Lantern mythology. However, the new Lanterns Season Finale Spoiler theory suggests that the image could have been an intentional clue to John’s eventual fate.
Lanterns Shares Several Earth One Elements
The theory becomes more interesting when comparing Lanterns with Green Lantern: Earth One. Both stories take a grounded approach to the Green Lantern mythology. Both also feature the Manhunters and explore conflict between Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
The Green Lantern costumes also have similarities, further connecting the two interpretations. None of these similarities prove that the HBO series will follow Earth One directly. However, they could explain why DC Studios selected that particular artwork for the original announcement.
John Stewart Could Become a Yellow Lantern
One major difference between Green and Yellow Lantern mythology involves the source of their power. Traditional Green Lantern rings are powered by willpower. Yellow Lantern rings are associated with fear. That distinction could be extremely important to John’s character arc.
Throughout Lanterns, John has repeatedly presented himself as someone who does not experience fear. However, his relationship with fear appears to be connected to the trauma he experienced during childhood. John has described himself as fearless because he is “broken.” That could mean his apparent lack of fear is not necessarily a traditional heroic quality. Instead, it may represent years of suppressing the emotions connected to his past.
John May Need to Embrace Fear
A Yellow Lantern transformation could potentially bring John’s story full circle. John has spent much of his life trying to suppress fear. If the finale forces him to confront that emotion, he could discover that fear does not necessarily make him weak. Instead, it could become a source of power. That would create an unusual path for the character.
Rather than immediately embracing the Green Lantern identity, John could potentially become connected to the Yellow Lantern mythology first. Of course, this remains a theory.
Sinestro Could Be the Key
The biggest connection to Yellow Lantern mythology may be Sinestro. Ulrich Thomsen plays Sinestro in Lanterns, and the series has already established his complicated history with the Guardians of the Universe.
Sinestro turned against the Guardians and killed one of their own before Hal eventually helped imprison him. In traditional DC mythology, Sinestro eventually leaves the Green Lantern Corps and creates a fear-powered group of his own. The series has not yet shown a Yellow Lantern ring. However, the finale could potentially change that.
The Alien Planet Could Create a Yellow Lantern Ring
John and Sinestro are currently on the homeworld of Antaan, the alien who traveled to Rushville while hunting the Manhunter. The planet is covered by a mysterious gas that causes people to become extremely afraid. The effects can become so severe that people turn homicidal or suicidal.
That makes the planet a potentially fitting location for the creation of a fear-based power ring. The planet also occasionally takes on a yellowish appearance. That could be another visual clue, although the color alone does not establish any connection to the Yellow Lantern Corps.
Is Sinestro Building Something?
Sinestro appears to be hiding inside a factory on the unnamed alien world. The location contains what appears to be a forge. That detail has led to speculation that Sinestro could be preparing to create something important. One possibility is that he is building a Yellow Lantern ring for himself.
Another theory suggests that he could create an additional ring for John. If that happened, John could potentially become one of Sinestro’s earliest recruits. Alternatively, John could take the ring from Sinestro while attempting to bring him to justice. Either possibility would dramatically change John’s relationship with the Lantern mythology.
Lanterns Episode 8 Puts Fear at the Center
The finale’s promotional material adds another major clue. The Lanterns Episode 8 trailer heavily emphasizes fear. Sinestro says:
“Fear can be the most powerful force in the universe.”
The Hal-ogram also tells John:
“Be afraid to be afraid.”
Those lines are especially significant because of John’s established relationship with fear. The dialogue could simply be encouraging John to confront his trauma. However, it could also be setting up the introduction of a new form of Lantern power.
John Stewart’s Fearless Nature Could Be the Key
John’s belief that he is fearless may ultimately become one of the most important parts of his character arc. Rather than learning how to eliminate fear, he may need to understand why he has spent so much of his life suppressing it. That would make the Yellow Lantern theory more thematically relevant.
If the finale connects John’s personal trauma with fear-based Lantern energy, his transformation could feel like a continuation of the story rather than a random twist. The question is whether the series will actually take that route.
The Power Battery Raises Another Question
The finale promo also shows John carrying a power battery. That is notable because he currently has no known battery of his own. Guy Gardner will also reportedly be summoned to Rushville’s Green Lantern signal. John’s battery could simply indicate that he is preparing to return to the Green Lantern Corps.
However, its presence raises another possibility. If John receives a new ring during the finale, the battery could potentially be connected to his next stage in the Lantern mythology. There is not enough information to determine what the scene means.
Could James Gunn Have Teased This in 2023?
The Lanterns Season Finale Spoiler theory ultimately comes down to the artwork used when Gunn first announced the series. The Green Lantern: Earth One artwork specifically depicted John Stewart as a Yellow Lantern. If DC Studios selected the image simply because it represented a different interpretation of the character, then it may have no connection to the finale.
But if the artwork was chosen intentionally, it could have been an early hint at John’s eventual path. The fact that Gunn reused the same imagery when Lanterns was officially greenlit makes the possibility even more interesting. Still, there is no confirmation that the artwork was intended as a spoiler.
Could John Become a Yellow Lantern?

Finally, the original Earth One artwork showed John as a Yellow Lantern. Any one of those clues could mean nothing. Together, they create an intriguing possibility. If John Stewart does become a Yellow Lantern, Gunn may have quietly teased the twist as far back as the original Lanterns announcement in 2023. For now, however, fans will have to wait for the finale to discover whether the theory becomes reality.
