DC Comics has once again revived a quirky yet deadly foe for Superman in Superman Unlimited #9. Specifically, Dan Slott writes the latest issue, and Mike Norton illustrates it. Moreover, it introduces a surprising twist to one of Superman’s most ludicrous villains: The Prankster. As a result, fans will experience a unique mix of humor, suspense, and shocking moments. Together, these elements breathe new life into this classic character.
Superman Faces The Prankster’s New Deadly Agenda
Superman Unlimited #9 opens with Clark Kent investigating a series of bizarre deaths. A falling piano crushed a songwriter. Another is a billionaire who died from an allergic reaction to a pie in the face. Interestingly, all the victims were philanthropists. Yet, the absurdity of their deaths overshadowed their heroic deeds.

DC first introduced The Prankster as crime boss Oswald Loomis in Action Comics #51 (1942). Initially, his schemes aimed to make Superman look foolish. Over the decades, however, creators reimagined him as a failed children’s TV host and later as a distraction-for-hire for Metropolis criminals. Today, DC gives him a darker, more calculated role, demonstrating that even minor villains can become dangerous threats.
Clark Kent observes:
“It’s one thing to die strangely, but it’s another to have your legacy erased in the process. Someone is taking pleasure in humiliation.”
This quote perfectly captures the shift in The Prankster’s modus operandi, showing that he now targets not just life but also reputation.
A Deadly Twist: Reputation-Killing Murders
In this storyline, Loomis acts as a broker for a specialized assassin. He reasons:
“Anyone can kill, but it takes a special something to kill a reputation.”

The Prankster partners with his nephew, a young metahuman who wields mysterious powers, adding to the threat. Together, they orchestrate murders that humiliate victims even in death, turning trivial acts into deadly lessons for the people of Metropolis.

Superman is forced to protect Perry White from a series of lethal “pranks,” including a collapsing statue and a deadly rain of baseballs. Despite his efforts, The Pranksters skillfully avoid suspicion. The younger Prankster vows revenge on Clark Kent after The Flash villain, The Trickster, is wrongly blamed.
“We’ll make sure he regrets this,” the young Prankster warns.
Clark’s investigation shows the challenges Superman faces as he balances heroism with detective work. It reveals a side of the Man of Steel that is rarely explored.
This issue combines humor, absurdity, and tension, creating a fresh narrative for a classic yet often-overlooked villain. Fans of Superman will appreciate how DC has modernized The Prankster while keeping the core of his chaotic personality intact. Superman Unlimited #9 is now available at comic shops everywhere, promising a unique reading experience that blends nostalgia with suspense.
Moreover, the story highlights how even seemingly silly villains can evolve into credible threats, proving that Superman’s challenges are never just black and white. With high stakes, clever schemes, and personal vendettas, this issue is a must-read for any Superman fan.
