In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, filmmaker Zack Snyder unveiled a surprising revelation about Tom Cruise’s desired role in his 2009 film, “Watchmen.”

Snyder, who was promoting his upcoming project “Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver,” disclosed that Cruise expressed interest in being part of the “Watchmen” universe. “I wanted Tom Cruise for Ozymandias,” Snyder shared. However, Cruise had his eyes set on a different character. “Tom wanted to play Rorschach. I mean, obviously, he could have done,” Snyder added.

Despite Cruise’s interest, the role of Rorschach had already been filled by Jackie Earle Haley, who delivered a memorable performance in the film. “But yeah, we had Jackie already, and Jackie is like, unbelievable,” Snyder remarked, praising Haley’s portrayal of the masked vigilante.

Reflecting on the casting choices, Snyder expressed that he would have considered Cruise for a role in “Watchmen” if Haley hadn’t been cast. “I certainly would have considered Tom, in retrospect, if I hadn’t had Jackie,” he concluded.

While fans can only imagine what Cruise’s portrayal of Rorschach would have been like, it’s fascinating to learn about the behind-the-scenes decisions that shaped the iconic superhero film. Snyder’s revelation adds an intriguing layer to the history of “Watchmen,” showcasing the complexities of casting and the choices that ultimately define a film’s legacy.
