Zack Snyder Reveals Why Christian Bale’s Batman Never Entered the Snyderverse!

By Patrick Webb Mar 4, 2026

Director Zack Snyder has once again sparked conversation among DC fans, this time addressing why Christian Bale’s version of Batman never appeared in the Snyderverse.

In a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused hosted by Josh Horowitz, Snyder reflected on early discussions about potentially connecting Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy to the DC Extended Universe.

Zack Snyder on the Early Crossover Conversations

Zack Snyder revealed that he had informal talks about bringing Bale’s Batman into Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The crossover could have been a major cinematic event. It would have merged Nolan’s grounded Gotham with the DCEU’s larger mythological world.

However, Snyder clarified that they never seriously pursued those conversations.

He explained that if the ending of The Dark Knight Rises had left Bruce Wayne actively protecting Gotham, the crossover might have been possible.

“If Bale had stayed — standing on a building overlooking Gotham — that’s a serious conversation,” Snyder said.

The Dark Knight Rises Ending Changed Everything

Instead of continuing as Gotham’s protector, Bruce Wayne retires at the end of The Dark Knight Rises. He relocates to Italy with Selina Kyle, portrayed by Anne Hathaway.

Zack Snyder noted that this narrative decision made merging the universes extremely difficult.

“If he’s not in Italy, retired, drinking wine and relaxing… if he’s a current crime fighter, then I think those universes could have mixed.”

The retirement gave Bruce Wayne a definitive ending — something Snyder respected creatively, even if it limited crossover opportunities.

The John Blake Factor

Another complication Zack Snyder acknowledged was the baton-passing moment involving John Blake, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The film strongly implies Blake could become Gotham’s next Batman. Snyder admitted that while it “could have been cool” to see Blake face Superman, audiences would have expected Bruce Wayne — not Blake — to headline such a monumental clash.

This expectation made it harder to link Nolan’s trilogy to Snyder’s universe.

Did Christopher Nolan Ever Plan a Shared Universe?

Zack Snyder also suggested that if Christopher Nolan had truly wanted a shared cinematic universe, he might have structured the trilogy’s ending differently.

However, Snyder emphasized that neither filmmaker seriously pushed to merge the worlds. Nolan intentionally crafted his trilogy as a grounded, self-contained story, while Zack Snyder shaped the DCEU into a more operatic and mythological universe.

Why Batman Was Ultimately Rebooted

Because of these narrative roadblocks, Warner Bros. opted to introduce a new version of Batman for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice rather than continue Nolan’s continuity.

The decision ensured that Zack Snyder could craft a Batman tailored specifically for his larger DC narrative.

Zack Snyder’s latest comments provide fresh insight into one of DC’s biggest “what if” scenarios. While fans may always wonder how Bale’s Dark Knight would have fared against Superman, the ending of The Dark Knight Rises effectively closed that chapter.

For now, the Snyderverse and Nolanverse remain separate legacies — each influential in its own right.
