David Goyer on Superman Reboot: “It’s Not Man of Steel at All

David S. Goyer, co-writer of Man of Steel (2013), has finally spoken out about the upcoming Superman reboot. The film, which is both written and directed by James Gunn, marks a major shift in tone for the character. During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Goyer revealed that although he hasn’t seen the entire movie yet, he’s already encouraged by what he has seen. In fact, David Goyer on Superman Reboot reflects clear optimism—he’s genuinely impressed by the trailer.

“It’s not Man of Steel at all,” Goyer explained.
“Because I came from that world, it would not have occurred to me to use Krypto, but when Krypto shows up, I’ve just got a big grin on my face.”

Overall, his comments clearly highlight a shift from Zack Snyder’s darker Superman vision. In contrast, Goyer seems genuinely enthusiastic about the lighter, more classic tone that James Gunn is now embracing in this new chapter of the DC Universe.

James Gunn Responds to SnyderVerse Critics

Meanwhile, while Goyer voiced support for the reboot, James Gunn has also had to respond to growing criticism from a vocal segment of the fandom—specifically, those still campaigning to “#RestoreTheSnyderVerse.”

In a Rolling Stone interview, Gunn directly addressed the backlash:

I think we will survive,” Gunn said.
“I’m not sure the eight people that listen to that guy (I’m going to go out on a limb and guess it’s a guy) are going to impact the course of events.”

Overall, his response strongly suggests confidence in his creative direction for Superman, even in the face of ongoing resistance from SnyderVerse supporters.

Online Negativity Affects a Key Superman Actor

Gunn also revealed that one of the film’s top actors has been taking online comments to heart.

“I don’t mind it. Honestly, it’s good. You don’t want to have everybody rooting for you.”Gunn said.
“And I have an actor who reads everything online. I won’t say who it is, but he’ll read this article, and he’ll know who it is. It’s one of the top five in Superman. And this actor gets so upset over things that people say.”
“I said, ‘First of all, you realize that the trailer came out and [reaction] was 97, 98% positive. These people help us, because you don’t want everything to seem 100% positive.’”

This candid moment shows just how personally the cast and crew are invested in the film’s reception.

David Goyer on Superman Reboot Highlights a Hopeful Legacy

With Goyer’s approval and Gunn’s resilience, Superman seems poised to offer a refreshing yet respectful new take. Instead of retreading the heavy tones of the Snyder era, this reboot aims to bring hope, legacy, and emotional balance to the character.

Therefore, for longtime fans and newcomers alike, this could very well be the Superman that defines a new generation of DC storytelling.
