James Gunn Discusses the Upcoming Justice League Movie!

By Shobith C Jan 10, 2024

James Gunn has recently delved into details about the highly anticipated Justice League movie, providing insights that have stirred excitement and speculation among fans. In a noteworthy revelation, the DC Studios co-CEO clarified key aspects regarding the animated adaptation of “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” shedding light on its distinct standing within the broader DC Universe.

Contrary to expectations fueled by the source material, Gunn took to Threads to announce that the upcoming Crisis trilogy will not be intricately tied to the DC Extended Universe’s (DCEU) transition into the DC Universe. This revelation follows the release of the gripping trailer for “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One”, leaving fans eagerly awaiting its unveiling.

The animated project, announced alongside a Watchmen adaptation at the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con, draws inspiration from the 1980s 12-issue limited comic book series. This iconic storyline sees the DC Multiverse on the brink of destruction, orchestrated by the formidable Anti-Monitor. Heroes and villains unite to thwart the impending cataclysm and forge a single Earth.

Accompanying the announcement was the reveal of the voice cast, featuring familiar Tomorrowverse talents reprising their roles. Darren Criss, Stana Katic, Jensen Ackles, and others will breathe life into the characters integral to this epic tale.

However, breaking away from convention, Gunn shared that “Crisis on Infinite Earths” is not the inaugural chapter of the DC Universe in animated form. Instead, the universe’s animated journey commences with “Creature Commandos,” a Max animated series slated for a late 2024 release. The series, based on the 1980 comic book team, introduces Viola Davis as Amanda Waller assembling a black ops team, led by Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr.

As fans eagerly anticipate the release of “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One,” scheduled for digital release on January 9, followed by 4K UHD and Blu-ray versions on January 23, Gunn’s unconventional narrative approach promises an animated experience that transcends expectations in the evolving landscape of DC storytelling. The intersection of iconic storylines, a stellar voice cast, and the promise of future animated ventures sets the stage for a new era in the DC Universe.
