The Wonder Woman Third Movie remains one of the biggest unrealized projects from the previous DC era, and recent comments from Gal Gadot have brought the possibility back into the spotlight.
The actress became synonymous with Diana Prince after appearing in multiple DCEU projects. However, the future of the character now looks very different as DC Studios builds a new cinematic universe.
That raises an interesting question: Could continuing the previous franchise have been a safer move for DC?
Wonder Woman Third Movie Was Once Considered
Gal Gadot previously portrayed Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in two solo films and had teased the possibility of returning for another adventure. However, Gadot recently confirmed that she has not spoken with James Gunn or DC Studios about reprising the role. Rather than campaigning for another appearance, the actress expressed gratitude for her time as the iconic superhero.
Gadot said:
“This is such an incredible character that so many of us care about so much, so whoever it’s going to be to portray her, I wish for her that she enjoys this amazing ride with this amazing character.”
She continued:
“And I’m just grateful that I was granted the opportunity to wear her boots and celebrate this incredible character and everything she stands for.”
Her comments suggest that Gadot is open to seeing another actress eventually take over the role.
Why Wonder Woman Became a Major DC Character?
Diana was introduced to the DCEU in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before receiving her own solo movie in 2017. The first Wonder Woman became one of the franchise’s biggest successes.
The movie received strong reviews and earned approximately $824 million worldwide, making Gadot’s portrayal an important part of the DCEU’s identity. The character returned in Wonder Woman 1984, which arrived three years later.
Wonder Woman 1984 Had a Difficult Release
Wonder Woman 1984 premiered in December 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Warner Bros. released the movie simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, significantly affecting its theatrical performance.
The sequel earned approximately $169 million worldwide. While that total was substantially below the original movie’s earnings, its release circumstances were completely different from those of a conventional theatrical blockbuster. As a result, the film’s box-office performance does not necessarily reflect the character’s full theatrical potential.
Could a Wonder Woman Third Movie Have Been a Safer Choice?
The Wonder Woman Third Movie could have offered DC an advantage that several new projects do not have: an established lead with an existing global audience. Gadot had already played Diana across multiple movies, while Wonder Woman remains one of DC’s most recognizable superheroes.
A new installment could therefore have relied on years of audience familiarity rather than introducing another version of a classic character. However, DC Studios chose to take a different path under James Gunn and Peter Safran.
DCU Takes a New Direction
Gunn and Safran have been rebuilding DC’s movie universe with a mixture of new interpretations and returning comic-book favorites. Rather than continuing the previous DCEU continuity, the new DCU is establishing its own interconnected storyline.
That includes introducing Milly Alcock as Supergirl. The character received a brief appearance at the end of Superman before becoming the lead of her own theatrical movie.
Supergirl Faces the New DCU Challenge
Supergirl represents one of the major bets of the new DCU. Milly Alcock’s version of Kara Zor-El is being positioned as a major theatrical superhero, giving DC another opportunity to build a new franchise.
Supergirl earned approximately $126 million worldwide. Although the movie’s performance cannot be directly compared with Wonder Woman 1984 because of their very different release conditions, the numbers have nevertheless fueled discussion about DC’s strategy. An established Wonder Woman franchise might have offered a different path.
What Did Gal Gadot Say About Returning?
Gadot’s recent comments are particularly notable because she did not express frustration over losing the role. Instead, she praised Wonder Woman and wished the next actress well. Her statement also indicates that she has not been involved in discussions with Gunn or DC Studios about returning.That makes a Wonder Woman Third Movie starring Gadot increasingly unlikely under the current DCU plans.
Who Will Play Wonder Woman Next?
DC Studios has not announced a new actress for Wonder Woman Third Movie. The character’s eventual introduction into the DCU could therefore become one of the studio’s biggest casting decisions.Whoever receives the role will inherit a character that has already become a major part of modern superhero cinema.
At the same time, the new DCU gives the studio an opportunity to reinvent Diana’s story without being tied to the previous continuity.
The Future of Wonder Woman
The Wonder Woman Third Movie may never happen with Gadot, but her version of Diana has already left a significant mark on the franchise. Her first solo movie became a major commercial and critical success, while her performance helped establish Wonder Woman as one of the DCEU’s central heroes. Now, DC Studios appears ready to create a new chapter for the character.
For fans, the biggest question is no longer whether Gadot will return, but when DC will finally introduce its new Wonder Woman.
