Former NBC host Megyn Kelly has criticized Supergirl star Milly Alcock following the film’s theatrical debut. Kelly argued that the movie’s disappointing box office performance reflected audience fatigue with what she described as Hollywood’s “girl-boss” storytelling.
Furthermore, Kelly made several personal remarks about Alcock while discussing the film and its reception. Her comments quickly sparked debate across social media. They drew reactions from both supporters and critics. As a result, the discussion surrounding the film gained even more attention.
Megyn Kelly Says Supergirl Failed Because of Its Message
During a recent discussion, Megyn Kelly claimed that Supergirl struggled at the box office. She argued that audiences are no longer interested in stories that, in her view, promote an artificial version of female empowerment.
According to Kelly, the era of “girl-boss” storytelling has run its course.
“It’s not authentic. It’s not organic. We’re no longer buying it.”
She argued that modern audiences prefer stories that feel more natural. According to Kelly, films should focus on strong storytelling and character development. She also said studios should avoid what she sees as forced ideological themes.
Additionally, Kelly pointed to the movie’s reported $38 million domestic opening, noting that it fell below expectations of around $50 million. She also claimed the film received weak scores across several review aggregator websites, using those figures to support her argument that audiences rejected the film’s approach.
However, box office performance can be influenced by many factors, including competition, marketing, audience interest, and overall critical reception.
Kelly Also Criticized Milly Alcock Personally
In addition to discussing the movie itself, Kelly directed several personal comments toward Milly Alcock.
She described the actress as “loathsome” and even remarked that she found Alcock “very weird looking” during her appearance in House of the Dragon. Those remarks shifted the conversation from the film’s performance to Alcock herself.
Moreover, Kelly argued that Alcock had created controversy through comments she made during previous interviews.
One of those interviews focused on the scrutiny women face online. At the time, Alcock said:
“It definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on. We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women’s bodies. I can’t really stop them. I can only be myself.”
Her comments addressed the online criticism and personal scrutiny she experienced after becoming a high-profile actress.
Later, while responding to online backlash over those remarks, Alcock joked that many anonymous critics had profile descriptions reading, “Dad of four, Christian.”
Kelly also took issue with that response, arguing that it unfairly characterized many of the actress’s critics. As a result, the exchange became another talking point in the broader discussion surrounding Supergirl and its cast.
Megyn Kelly Disagreed With Alcock’s View of Supergirl
Kelly further criticized Alcock’s comments about Supergirl itself.
Previously, Alcock explained that she appreciated the film because it focused on Supergirl’s resilience instead of making a romantic relationship the center of the story. She also said she was honored that the movie resonated with members of the LGBTQ community.
Kelly strongly disagreed with that perspective.
“So, you can’t center around a love relationship because that would be offensive and obviously disempowering.”
She continued:
“If you are in a love relationship with a man, as a woman, it’s disempowering to your superhero narrative. F that.”
Kelly concluded her criticism by saying:
“Virtually every woman on earth who’s straight would love to connect with a man, form a love relationship, and be buoyed up by it, and not diminished, which is a Hollywood, weird, woke message.”
Her remarks reflected her broader criticism of modern Hollywood storytelling, which she believes has moved away from more traditional character dynamics. Meanwhile, Alcock’s previous comments centered on presenting Supergirl as a hero whose personal growth and resilience drive the story rather than a romantic subplot.
Megyn Kelly’s Comments Spark Wider Debate
Megyn Kelly’s remarks have added another layer to the ongoing conversation surrounding Supergirl and its box office performance. While Kelly believes the film underperformed because of its themes and messaging, others continue to debate the many factors that influence a movie’s commercial success.
The discussion has also reignited conversations about how actors respond to online criticism and how audiences interpret creative decisions in modern superhero films. As reactions continue across social media, opinions remain divided over both Kelly’s criticism and Alcock’s previous statements.
For now, Supergirl remains one of the most talked-about DCU releases of the year, with its box office performance and public reception continuing to generate headlines well beyond its opening weekend.
